Why is St. John Doing a Corridors Plan?
No doubt, traffic along the corridors is the number one concern for the study area (101st Ave, Calumet Ave, and 109th Ave). The Town is focusing on this issue and working with other agencies to manage those problems.
In addition, St. John is thinking ahead to proactively address other needs of these emerging corridors. As transportation and traffic improvements come along, there will be opportunities to make other enhancements. Those are the focus of this study, and they include:
- Translating community identity & vision for the future into how the three key corridors look and feel when residents and visitors pass through – so that the corridors clearly reflect St. John.
- Setting a standard for the appearance of the corridors’ public ways through streetscape design.
- Defining the model for desirable development along the corridors by envisioning concept plans for key sites.
- Improving transportation to address safety, convenience, and connectivity needs related to traffic, bikers, and pedestrians.

What is involved in the planning process?
- Information Collection: Past plans, pending improvements, land use, traffic impacts, environmental issues & opportunities…the project team will be reviewing information on current conditions before developing recommendations for the corridors’ future.
- Community Outreach: Key to this process is hearing from residents and interested stakeholders about their perspectives on the corridors. The project will involve this website, news updates, community workshops, meetings with the Plan commission and Town Council, community polls, and more.
- Streetscape Design Opportunities: Using community feedback, the project team will identify options for lighting, trees, signage along the roadways, and other streetscape design elements.
- Development Design Guidelines: The project will set standards for private development along the corridors – such as building orientation, scale, materials, landscaping, and more.
- Site Concept Plans: Ultimately, the plan will include conceptual site plans for three key locations along the corridors to set St. John’s expectations for those areas and convey to developers what is desired by the Town.
